A Dynamic Location

We are best positioned to be the beacon for an innovation district in Arlington. The proximity of the Mason Square to Amazon HQ2, Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus, and downtown Washington, D.C., will allow us to amplify existing innovation in the region.

A Research Powerhouse

As an R1 university, we conduct research that goes beyond the desire to understand; we make a difference, changing lives and changing the world. Mason Square is growing, and with that growth is coming a variety of spaces dedicated to both specialized purposes and mingling between groups. As businesses join Mason Square, we are meeting their requirements and needs, ensuring all specialized equipment is available to them. And, when not working in these dedicated spaces, members of the Mason Square community can easily come together in open, shared-use spaces that allow for sharing of ideas and concepts.

A Business Incubator

Our spaces are designed to inspire innovation and impact, especially in the entrepreneurial members of our community. Throughout campus, education comes not just in a classroom but in trying to start something no one has ever done before. We are supporting the entrepreneurial members of our community and helping them get the resources and advisors they need to succeed. The collaborative work of students, scholars, and entrepreneurs will fast-track ideas from research and development to marketability.

A Technology Leader

Arlington has been repeatedly named the "Top Digital County in America" for counties its size. This region continues to grow in the realm of technology-driven innovation, and we could ask for no better home for Mason Square and the Institute for Digital Innovation (IDIA). With more than 300 researchers, innovators, and scholars, IDIA will focus on technology, systems, and educating a digital society.

Mason Square will support Virginia's Tech Talent Investment Program

This 20-year plan is designed to produce 25,000 additional graduates in computer science, computer engineering, and software engineering.

A Model of Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity is a Mason core value, reflecting our status as the most diverse university in Virginia. We value diversity and inclusion, as the power of many perspectives boosts our capacity to explore original ideas, develop creative solutions, and meet grand challenges.

Fuse Building

The new centerpiece of campus, the Fuse building, from Mason Innovation Partners, will incorporate advanced cyber-infrastructure and design to support digital innovation, active learning, cutting-edge research and tech incubators. The building also will feature spaces to support public programming for the Arlington community, ground-floor retail, a below-grade parking garage and a public plaza. Commercial tenants and industry collaborators will benefit from proximity to Mason students and faculty, high-tech talent, and collision space.

Fuse at Mason Square will be a net-zero carbon emissions-ready building with:

  • LEED Platinum, FitWel 2.1, and RELi 2.0 certifications
  • Energy-efficient green roof for heating and cooling,
  • An agile floor design to enable responsive team or project growth,
  • Specialized labs for robotics, VR, simulation, security, and data visualization.
  • A 50-seat theater-style multipurpose room,
  • Double height atrium and outdoor plaza for retail and community events
